The entry was chosen by the French film institute Centre national de la cinématographie (CNC) and will be entered in the best foreign language film category.

The film will be one of around 30 films put forward by different countries that will then be whittled down to a shortlist of six.

The film was released in France on August 31st to good reviews and has already been seen by 400,000 people.

It tells the story of a couple who discover their son is seriously ill. It has already won a series of prizes in France, including best film at the festival of Angoulême.

The film is based on the true story of the film's director, Valerie Donzelli, and her former partner Jérémie Elkaïm, both of whom star in the film.

"It's only in France that we could make a film like this," she told radio station Europe 1 on Friday. "It's a small film with a tiny budget but we got the help of subsidies."

The 2011 winner in the best foreign language film category was Danish film "In a Better World." The last time France won was with Indochine starring Catherine Deneuve in 1992.

The 84th Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on February 26th.
