Man arrested after death of baby daughter
A Swedish man from Örebro, in central Sweden, has been remanded into custody under suspicion of aggravated assault after one of his two months old twin daughters died two weeks ago.
”Now the suspicions have been extended to involve assault of the second baby girl,” deputy prosecutor Pia Åsberg said to local paper Nerikes Allehanda.
The young couple, both in their twenties, had twins in June.
But because the father had a long criminal record, as well as a history of psychiatric problems, the couple and their daughters were placed in supervised accommodation for the first few months.
Two weeks ago one of the girls was found lifeless next to her sister in the bed.
The parents claimed that they had found her that way, and police and an on-call doctor called to the scene and pronounced the baby girl dead.
After the autopsy, both parents were brought in for questioning by the police.
Following initial questioning, authorities decided that the mother would be let go while a warrant for the father's arrest was issued, on the suspicion of aggravated assault and possible manslaughter.
"The district court decided to remand him into custody for aggravated assault. But now the suspicions have been extended to involve the other girl as well,” Åsberg told the paper.
On Thursday the examination of the second twin was completed.
”The child showed signs of serious although not life-threatening injuries, similar to those of the dead girl,” said Åsberg to newspaper Aftonbladet.
According to Aftonbladet, the mother was writing on Facebook late on Thursday evening.
”Was it not enough with one? Did you have to hurt them both?,” she wrote, according to the paper.
The father denies all allegations.
