Müller said the German automaker wanted to develop a mid-range model using the classic Porsche 959 design from the 1980s.
“It’s always bothered me that our 911 stops at around €250,000, and then the 918 starts at €750,000,” Müller told the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper in an interview on Monday. “In between, Ferrari cavorts around relatively comfortably and free from competition. We have to get in there.”
The new car is set to carry a price-tag of between €250,000 and €400,000. Müller said he is determined to double Porsche sales from 100,000 to 200,000 in the coming years. On top of that, he also wants to increase cooperation with Porsche’s parent company Volkswagen.
The two companies have already integrated some of their manufacturing operations.
The Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg are already built in the same factory and use a number of the same parts.
This cooperation is to be expanded so it includes the Porsche 911. But Müller denied that this could tarnish Porsche’s elite brand.
“There are parts that really don’t have any influence on the character of the car,” he said.
