Hunting dog sniffs out secret pot plantation

A hunting dog in southern Sweden proved it had a nose for more than wild game after it abandoned the chase after an injured deer after catching a whiff of what turned out to be a marijuana plantation hidden deep in the forest.

The incident took place last Friday on the island of Öland off Sweden's east coast after a group of hunters had taken a shot at a deer in the forests between Vickleby and Stora Frö, the local Ölandsbladet newspaper reported.

In order to make sure the injured deer wasn't subject to any undue suffering, the hunters sent the dog after the animal.

It didn't take long for the dog to pick up a scent – but instead of leading the hunters to the injured deer, they instead stumbled across 12 marijuana plants covered in a net hidden among the trees.

“It was right in the middle of the forest,” Reinhold Liljedahl of the Kalmar police told the newspaper.

The hunters quickly realised that their dog had inadvertently uncovered a secret cannabis plantation and immediately alerted police who disposed of the contraband plants.

According to the paper, the deer which prompted the unintentional drug bust reportedly survived, but will now have to subsist on “regular grass”.
