The man was found lifeless in his cell on Tuesday morning and prison medical staff were summoned immediately, according to a statement from the Swedish Prison and Probation Service (Kriminalvården).

When the prison's medical staff arrived it was concluded that the man was dead, and his death had been attributed to suicide.

"The incident is incredibly tragic. We have now launched an inquiry into the incident," said Christer Krohn at the prison in Gothenburg.

In accordance with Prison and Probation Service regulations the matter will be duly reported to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) in line with Lex Maria, the name used to refer to regulations governing the reporting of injuries or incidents in the Swedish health care system.

The man, reported to have been born in 1972, was recently convicted and sentence to a long prison sentence for aggravated drugs offences.

The man was not under frequent observation, as a judgement made in connection with the court ruling considered him not to be at risk and that such a measure was unnecessary.
