Father charged in 7-year-old son's fatal stabbing
A 53-year-old man suspected of stabbing his 7-year-old son to death in July was formally charged with the boy's murder on Monday in Umeå in northern Sweden.
The man, who has been held since July 10th after admitting he caused his son's death, has also been charged with unlawful coercion.
The motive behind the gruesome, in which the 7-year-old boy was taken to hospital with 17 stab wounds, remains unknown.
Police were called to a flat in the Tomtebo neighbourhood in Umeå the evening of July 10th, where they found the boy's lifeless body.
The boy's 53-year-old father was placed under arrest immediately after the incident and remained in custody on suspicion of murder.
He has told investigators that he didn't intend to kill the boy.
The knife used in the deadly attack and caused the boy's fatal injuries was found at scene.
The boy's grandmother was also arrested following the crime, but was released shortly thereafter and no longer figures in the investigation.
Instead, she plans to testify in court about the 53-year-old man's behaviour.
The unlawful coercion charge stems from actions in which he coerced the grandmother out of the apartment and then locked the door to stop her from reentering the flat.
He is also charged with having grabbed the woman and trying to throw her down a stairwell.
The boy's mother wasn't around at the time of the murder.
Although she had previously reported her husband for violent behaviour and threats, the 53-year-old had had never been charged with any crime.
The man has undergone a so-called paragraph 7 examination to assess his psychiatric health, which revealed that he may suffer from a serious psychiatric disturbance.
As a result, he district court in Umeå on Augsut 11th ordered the man to undergo a more detailed forensic psychiatric examination, which is expected to take four to six weeks.
