The police don't think the younger man, who was shot in the foot, was a planned victim.

"He was probably just in the way," said police officer Kjell Hellström of the Västerort police force to newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

"He's going into surgery on Sunday, he's got a bullet in his heel."

The 25-year-old spent the night in surgery at Karolinska University Hospital, after being hit by numerous bullets, in his stomach and his leg.

"It looks like he's going to make it," said Hellström to news agency TT.

Stockholm police are operating under the assumption that the gun shots were meant for the 25-year-old. He's identified, and is already in police records, according to Hellström.

"We think there's been some sort of settlement here, where the gunman came up and shot at this person. But the man who was shot won't say anything, he says he doesn't know who shot."

No one has been arrested for the shooting, which occurred at 10pm Saturday evening, but several people witnessed the incident and have been interviewed by the police, who are confident the perpetrator will be found.

"We've taken a lot of information from witnesses, we've got a good description, and have the footage from the subway and other nearby institutions," said Hellström to Dagens Nyheter.

"We should be able to solve this in good time."
