Woman calls SOS alarm 2,000 times
A 60-year-old woman from southern Stockholm is suspected of having made between 1,500 and 2,000 calls to emergency services since the beginning of the year, according to a report in Swedish newspaper Metro.
On Thursday she was brought into custody pending charges for eleven cases of false alarm.
“In these eleven cases ambulances requested by her have been dispatched to aid both her and others,” said Rasmus Öhman, assistant prosecutor at southern Stockholm’s prosecution office.
The woman’s calls have also led to several police turnouts.
In total she is believed to have made between 1,500 and 2,000 calls requesting ambulances or police aid since the beginning of the year and the court believes that there is a high risk that she will “continue in her criminal activity”, reported Metro on Friday.
The woman has admitted to making the calls but contests the decision to keep her in custody. According to her she has made the calls solely when under the influence of alcohol.
“She will now undergo investigation. We will see what it shows, but the hope is that she will receive the care that she needs,” Öhman told Metro.
According to Sverker Petersson at SOS Alarm, these cases tend to occur a few times a year. Staff at emergency services alarm central must deal with all incoming calls.
“These people become known to us fairly quickly but the problem is that they rob others of our time and resources,” he told Metro.
