Police arrest one as Stockholm youths 'riot'

Swedish police have confirmed that they arrested one person following clashes with a group of young people in a Stockholm suburb on Monday but played down a link to the riots rocking London.

Shortly before 9pm on Monday, a group of 20 to 30 young people broke a ticket booth window and emptied out a fire extinguisher at the Hässelby Gård metro station, in the west of the Swedish capital.

When police arrived, they threw rocks at their vehicles and later broke windows at the local police station, at a state-run liquor store and of several cars, police spokeswoman Diana Sundin told the TT news agency.

"It seems like a group of young people that had nothing to do. To say it was inspired by the London riots would be very far-fetched," she said.

The man arrested, in his 20s, was known to police.

Four others identified by security camera footage are now wanted by the police for questioning.

Suburbs of the British capital were hit by a third night of rioting Monday, while violence also broke out in Birmingham, Liverpool and Bristol.

Prime Minister David Cameron broke off his holiday and on Tuesday called a special parliament session to debate the riots.

The Swedish embassy in London has furthermore issued a statement warning Swedes in London and other cities with rioting to follow the events closely and avoid the affected areas.
