The families of two French tourists shot dead in Argentina were to meet with a French government minister on Sunday while other officials were headed to the place of their murder, the government said.

Junior minister for French nationals overseas David Douillet "will express his full solidarity and the total mobilisation of the foreign ministry in Paris and in Argentina to support them and help them get over this ordeal," a statement said.

The two French women, both 30, were found dead by hikers in a tourist area of northern Argentina on Friday, authorities said. One was shot in the head and apparently sexually abused and the other was shot in the back.

"The French ambassador and the consul general in Argentina and several consular agents are travelling to Salta province" where the women were found, the French statement added.

Argentine authorities have launched an investigation but no arrests have yet been made.

The French statement added: "We have full confidence in the Argentine authorities with whom we are in constant contact to shed light on these murders so that those responsible can be identified and judged."
