French jobless rate up again in June

France’s jobless figure went up for a second consecutive month in June, rising by 1.3 percent to 2.7 million. The new figure is up 1.5 percent on the same period last year.

The rate was up for all age groups, with the biggest rise among older people, aged 50 and above, 2 percent. The rate for the under-25s was up by 1.4 percent.

“The bad figures for May and June mean we need to implement as quickly as possible the measures adopted by parliament at the start of July,” said employment minister Xavier Bertrand on Wednesday.

He pointed to measures including new apprenticeships for young people and a guarantee that anyone made redundant will get 98 percent of their net salary for one year.

“Without a change in policies there will be no change in the outcome,” said Socialist party spokesman Alain Vidalies in a statement. “The economic crisis can’t be blamed for the successive failures of this government for which jobs have never been a priority.”
