Switzerland's top court confirmed Friday that it has thrown out an appeal by French veteran film star Alain Delon against a fine imposed on him for using a fake licence plate.

In a ruling seen by AFP, the Swiss Federal Tribunal said that while Delon did not contest that his car was affixed with a falsified licence plate, he argued there was no proof he had been the one who had put them on.

"We understand that the cantonal courts believe that Delon's declarations were not credible... For this reason, the tribunal rejects the appeal," it added in a ruling dated July 8th.

Delon would therefore have to pay a fine of 1,500 Swiss francs (about $1,800) or face a 15-day jail sentence.

The French actor has been a Swiss citizen for 12 years and lives in Geneva.
