Supporters of Dominique Strauss-Kahn called on the Socialist Party on Sunday to make an exception for their preferred candidate, if he is able to return to the political fray in France.

Nominations for the primaries closed on July 13th, too soon for Strauss-Kahn who is still in New York facing charges of attempted rape. The full list of candidates will be published on Wednesday.

Jean-Pierre Mignard, the lawyer in charge of the primaries, appeared unmoved. He told Le Parisien on Sunday that "these are the rules. There is no provision in place to change this situation."

One of Mr Strauss-Kahn's supporters, Antonio Duarte, wrote, "The Socialist Party cannot throw away its best chance for the presidency in 2012. Entering the campaign late, particularly when the outgoing president hasn't yet declared he will run, would not be a handicap for DSK".

The request was made as new reports circulated at the weekend that Strauss-Kahn slept with three women on the fateful weekend in New York. According to a report in Le Point, the former IMF chief told his wife, Anne Sinclair, he had slept with the women as a way to let off steam before the French presidential race. A friend of Sinclair told the magazine: "It wasn't just one for the road, it was three."
