Sweden set for summer heat wave
As many Swedes start to head off on their annual holidays this week weather forecasters are predicting a heat wave across much of the country.
"Warm air is currently streaming up the country," said Lars Knutson at Swedish meteorological institute SMHI in a statement.
Temperatures of up to 27 degrees Celsius are expected in southern areas with sunny weather expected across the whole country, except for the far north, for much of the week.
Temperatures are expected to swing from 21-27 degrees Celsius on Wednesday with temperatures dropping in connection with sporadic rainfall. The heat wave is expected to bring with it a risk of thunder storms on Friday, primarily in Götaland and Svealand.
The warmer temperatures are a result of a high pressure front coming in from mainland Europe with temperatures around the Mediterranean climbing to above 30 degrees Celsius.
However sun-deprived Swedes will have to hurry to enjoy the summer weather with cooler temperatures and rainfalls forecast for the weekend and next week.
Despite the warm beginning and end to the month, June has offered up fairly average weather for the season in comparison with previous years.
The early hot spell reached highs close to previous records but the cooler period running up to the Midsummer holiday brought the month back to normal.
