The discovery was made yesterday evening by a team in a police helicopter. Early signs suggest the body is that of missing schoolgirl Marie-Jeanne Meyer, although a formal identification is still to take place.

Marie-Jeanne went missing late on Saturday afternoon while out jogging near her home in Tournon-sur-Rhône in the Ardèche.  Her glasses and MP3 player had been found close by earlier in the day. Clothes that seemingly belonged to the girl were also found close by.

The local prosecutor, Christophe Raffin, was reported as saying that there was only a “remote” chance that the the body was not that of the young girl.

The body had been placed in a place that was difficult to access, suggesting to investigators that there was criminal involvement.

The mayor of Tournon-sur-Rhône said that a DNA analysis would be carried out to confirm the identity of the victim and that this would be confirmed in the next 48 hours.  He added that everyone in the town was “deeply shocked” and that “if this is the body of Marie-Jeanne, everything will be done to find those responsible.”
