Sexist views block man's bid to be French

An Algerian man was refused French nationality on the grounds that he held degrading views about women.

The judgment was issued by the Interior Ministry and is believed to be the first of its kind in France.

A spokesman for the government department told radio station Europe 1 that the man, married to a French woman, did not allow his wife “to leave the house of her own free will” and that “he had a view of women that was degrading.” The woman is also reported to have claimed she was not able to work because her husband would not allow it.

The decision follows a recent article written by the Interior Minister, Claude Géant, which said that “assimilation means embracing our culture and participating thoroughly in our social and cultural life.”

The matter will now be passed to the state's legal authority, the Conseil d’Etat, to make a formal ruling on the case.
