Swiss Alps welcome summer - with snow
Some snow, heavy rain and cold temperatures have been registered in Switzerland on June 1st, the first day of meteorological summer.
Snow above 1,100 and 1,600 metres of altitude has been reported in the mountains near Bern, while rain and cold temperatures were registered in other parts of Switzerland, said the local weather office.
Snowfall at high mountain altitudes at this time of the year is not unusual, but the phenomenon is in striking contrast with the recent heat wave and record dry spell registered in March, April and May.
