Union: Big shortage in public sector workers
Trade union Travail Suisse has warned that Switzerland is running out of police officers, teachers and careworkers, and called for fewer early retirements and more women in the public sector.
Travail Suisse pointed to a new study which said that up to 400,000 positions could go unfilled by 2030 if more people did not choose these occupations. To this end, the union presented a ten-point strategy on Tuesday to get more people into work.
Travail Suisse believe that in order for the vacancies to be filled without extra immigration, Switzerland needs a more demographically-flexible job market.
Old people and women remain a source of untapped potential, according to the plan. A new report by the Office for Work and Social Studies (BASS) said that half of the 400,000 vacancies could be filled if fewer people retire early and more women leave the home to work.
The union is also calling for more investment in education and healthcare, and improvements in working conditions to allow employees to better integrate their family and professional lives.
Travail Suisse suggested measures such as more holidays, parental leave for fathers, more part-time positions, more daycare centres for children and more attention paid to health in the workplace would all benefit the job market.
