Man hurt in Gothenburg bomb attack
An explosion ripped through a house in Kungälv in western Sweden early Monday morning sending one man to hospital in what police believe was an attempted murder.
The blast occurred at a house on the outskirts of Kungälv, located about 20 kilometres north of Gothenburg, around 7am on Monday morning.
"One man is injured, probably seriously," police spokesperson Björ Blixter told the TT news agency.
Mats Hvit, a leader of the police response team, told the local Göteborgs-Posten (GP) newspaper that the blast was caused by the detonation of an explosive device which was placed outside the house's cellar.
"I don't want to speculate on what may lie behind this," he told the newspaper.
Police have nevertheless launched a preliminary investigation into attempted murder.
The 44-year-old father of two who was injured in the blast was flown by helicopter to Sahlgrenska hospital in Gothenburg for treatment of shrapnel injuries.
His wife and one of his children were in the house at the time of the explosion, but were unharmed.
The police bomb squad has since searched the area and no additional explosive devices were found.
No arrests have been made and police continue to probe possible motives for the attack.
According to the Aftonbladet newspaper, neither than man nor anyone in his family are known to police.
Nor does he have any connections to known criminal gangs in Sweden.
