Greens: 'ban military arms exports'
The Green Party's Congress has decided to push for a ban on the sales of arms for military purposes and will continue its position that Sweden cease all non-UN-led missions.
During its party conference in Karlstad this weekend, the Green Party's Congress decided to rally for a ban on all sales of arms for military purposes.
The leadership also decided that the party would continue to stand firm in its position that Sweden stop involvement in all non-UN-led missions.
With newly elected spokespersons Gustav Fridolin and Åsa Romson in place, the Green Party council pushed through a series of other decisions.
In addition to restrictions on the export of arms, the Congress voted to work toward the ban of smoking in public places, including outside entrances, as well as prohibit farm sales of alcohol.
The Green Party also elected to launch an ‘urgent investigation’ into the pharmaceutical and patient safety given the deregulation of the pharmacy market.
Furthermore, the party wants to require that all pharmacies provide information about one another’s access to drugs regardless of the owners.
The congress voted to introduce a needle exchange law in all counties and aims to give greater attention to alternative medicine research.
Motions seeking the party break its agreement with the government’s Afghanistan Operation were rejected.
However, the Congress did adopt the stipulation that the environment party will only support a future Afghanistan bill if military appropriations decrease sharply.
In addition to electing their new spokespersons, the Green Congress has appointed a new National Council, composed of nine women and six men aged between 67 and 28 years.
