A machine shop burst into flames at about 9pm Saturday in an industrial area known as Bergnäset in Luleå, northern Sweden.

Despite around the clock efforts, the blaze was not extinguised until early Sunday morning.

The property, which was completely engulfed in flames, contained about 20 gas cylinders that posed a serious threat of exploding during the course of the blaze.

An area of 300 metres around the 20x50 metre building had been sealed off through the night but the blockade was lifted Sunday morning after the gas cylinders were taken care of.

”Right now we are still trying to cool the building,” Thomas Wikström, duty officer with Luleå emergency services told northern Sweden’s newspaper Norrbotens Kuriren.

Staff reportedly remain on site at Fabriksgatan working to cool down what has been damaged by the fire.

“We do not yet know the cause of the fire. The building was quickly in flames with heavy smoke but there was no risk to the public,” Wikström told Sveriges Radio (SR).

No residential buildings are reported to be in the vicinity and no one has been injured.
