The Swiss Cantonal civil engineering department said concern is growing that the cheeky rodents, which live in rivers and lakes in the Bern-Mittelland district, are could cause serious structural and environmental damage.

In certain areas, trees have had to be cut down as a precaution to prevent them from falling and injuring hikers and motorists, said a report on the daily 20 Minuten.

The danger of collapse is greatest on roads and trails that are closer to the populated waters, experts said. Counter-measures, such as the forced relocation of the animals, are currently being studied, the paper said.
