The Social Democrats have once again emphasised their committment to public healthcare services ahead of tomorrow’s by-election in Västra Götaland.

“We must ensure that the jointly-funded healthcare resources are used where needs are greatest," said keynote speaker Leif Pagrotsky.

During his speech at the Social Democrats campaign hut, Pagrotsky also talked of the need to improve public transport, admitting that even he has problems understanding how to buy a ticket for a bus journey.

Pagrotsky explained that on a trip on Västtraffik recently he had to get off the bus and ask for help.

“A radical simplification with a flat rate of public transport is an important requirement here in Västra Götaland," he said during the speech.

Meanwhile the main aims with the healthcare system, according to Pagrotsky, should focus on the financial aspect and cutting down waiting times for treatment.

“There are times when you are weak, you are vulnerable and worried. To see a doctor quickly has to be a priority. Today you can see a doctor within an hour in 60 percent of cases, but that is not good enough,” said Pagrotsky, adding that the Social Democrats employed 1,000 extra doctors during their last stay in power.
