A cool and wet weekend is forecast for much of the country, offering farmers much-needed respite after weeks of near-drought conditions, the German Weather Service (DWD) said Friday.

“Many are hoping that the next few showers will bring some relief,” said DWD meteorologist Dorothea Paetzold in a statement.

“The weather the next few days will be variable, almost April weather in May,” she added. “The cooler air and possible storms starting Sunday will continue, and warmer weather isn’t likely until the second half of next week.”

On Friday night, parts of southwestern Germany will see scattered showers, but most of the country will otherwise remain dry. Temperatures will drop to about 6 degrees Celsius in the north and 10 degrees in the southwest.

On Saturday, clouds will cover most of the country, with thunderstorms possible in some regions, especially near the Danube river in the south and on the leeward side of highland regions.

High temperatures will reach only 15 degrees in coastal regions and 23 degrees in the south and east of the country. Calm, westerly winds will become brisker in areas affected by storms.

On Saturday night, most of the country will be cloudy, while southern regions around the Danube could see some rain. The west and north will be partly clear, with temperatures dropping to between 5 and 10 degrees.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible in all regions on Sunday, while southern regions near the Danube will see steady rainfall.

High temperatures will reach between 13 and 18 degrees, while Alpine foothills will be colder, around 10 degrees, and areas above 1,500 metres could see snowfall. Moderate winds will blow out of the northwest.

Sunday night, western and eastern highlands will see showers, while rain will fall steadily in Alpine regions.

The north and northwest will remain mostly dry, and clear skies are possible especially near the Baltic coast. Temperatures across the country will drop to between 4 and 9 degrees.

Clouds will cover most regions Monday, with showers and storms possible. The north and northeast will remain mostly dry, but Alpine regions could again experience downpours.

With high temperatures of 17 degrees in Berlin and only 9 degrees in the Alps, it will be noticeably cooler than in recent days, with moderate winds out of the north and west.

Scattered showers are also possible Monday night, but the north will be mostly dry. Temperatures will plunge to between 3 and 8 degrees.
