A labour court in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia has upheld the firing of a deeply religious call centre agent who ended calls with customers by saying “Jesus loves you.”

The QVC home shopping service decided to fire the 29-year-old in early 2010, but a labour court in Bochum later ruled that the man’s religious faith was more important than the company’s right to hire and fire who they wished.

QVC appealed to a higher court, which upheld the firing and ruled that the employee would not have had a crisis of conscience had he omitted his unique farewell to customers.

The man can still appeal his case to higher power – Germany’s Federal Labour Court.
