Former Berlin rapper Deso Dogg, who quit music to become a radical Islamic preacher, is facing weapons charges after police raided his home and found ammunition.

A prominent member of the Salafist scene, 35-year-old “Deso Dogg” whose real name is Mamadou C. but is known in Islamist circles as Abou Maleeq, had stashed 16 rounds of ammunition at his home in March 2010.

He had also recorded and posted on Youtube a video in which he loads a semi-automatic Glock pistol – for which he does not have a licence.

The Berlin state prosecutor spokesman Martin Steltner confirmed that charges were being made against the former rapper.

Mamadou C. has previous convictions on drug charges. As Abou Maleeq, he has repeatedly made the headlines for openly praising violent Jihad, or holy war, and has long been in the sights of German intelligence agencies.

Mamadou C. was born in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg. He was a successful rap artist until last November when he announced he was quitting music to become a preacher.
