The incident occurred at 3am on Wednesday morning, according to a Västerbotten police report.

"A 30 year-old man was arrested near his residence on suspicion of attempted murder. Previously during the night the man inflicted severe injuries on his girlfriend with a sword," the police report read.

Police confirmed that the woman was rushed to Umeå hospital in an ambulance and according to the local Västerbottens Kuriren (VK) daily she underwent an emergency operation.

The woman was lying on her bed when her partner attacked and stabbed her in the back with a newly manufactured samurai sword, the newspaper reported.

The police were called by a neighbour and the man was arrested.

"The negotiator managed to get the man to come out of the apartment and the arrest was undramatic," said Mikael Liljenberg at Umeå police to VK.

Police have confirmed that they were able to conclude during the journey to the police station that the suspect was under the influence of alcohol.

The 30-year-old man is being held on suspicion of attempted murder.
