Spring weather beckons for Sweden

Temperatures across Sweden are set to top 10 degrees Celsius all week, with highs of around 15 over the weekend in southern parts, as Swedes welcome in the spring.

While spring was officially declared in mid-March in many parts of Sweden, sporadic snowfalls and near zero temperatures have left Swedes wondering when the warmer weather would arrive.

Sweden's meteorological office SMHI has forecast that temperatures this week will remain above 10 degrees Celsius as a low pressure front pushes cloudy weather with rain showers in from the west of the country.

"By the end of the week the north-westerly will ease and then the drier and warmer weather will arrive. On Sunday we could get up to 15 degrees Celsius in the south," said SMHI meteorologist Berndt Möller in a comment.

SMHI's forecast shows that sunny spells are to be expected in many areas of the country over the weekend with the last of the snow set to melt in central Stockholm.

SMHI's definition of spring is when the daily average temperature remains above zero for seven days in succession. According to this definition the spring has officially begun in all areas up to around Uppsala in the east and the Norwegian border in the west.

Furthermore spring-like temperatures are being enjoyed in areas as far north as Kiruna although without the duration for the new season to begin.
