Police in the eastern Swiss town of St. Gallen have arrested the couple on Monday, after they defrauded a series of restaurants in the country over a period of weeks, managing to eat and run before paying the bill.

The two, a 21-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, both Swiss, have admitted a total of 26 cases, including 10 in St. Gallen and eight in Zurich, local reports say.

The couple took breaks to smoke a cigarette outside the restaurant between courses, until desserts came and they would be nowhere to be found.

The two, who were identified thanks to witness descriptions, have said they did not have enough money to eat, according to reports.

Police found that most restaurants bills amounted to a total of 150-200 francs, reports say.
