Temperatures in Switzerland were well above the average for the season over the weekend, prompting residents and tourists in flipflops to spend their days outside, enjoying picnics in parks and along the cities’ lakes and rivers.

According to national weather agency Meteo Swiss, temperatures peaked at 26 degrees Celsius in canton Valais and were around 25 degrees Celsius in central Switzerland on Saturday, a record for the beginning of April. The balmy temperatures coupled with dry conditions to gift the Alpine country with an early taste of summer.

The spring weekend however appeared to be short-lived after a cold front reached the northern Alps overnight, causing heavy rain and a drop in temperatures on Monday. Weather forecasts for the week say spring should come back as of Wednesday.
