Japanese restaurants in Switzerland's largest city are launching an information campaign aimed at reassuring clients that the food products they use are safe.

A statement on the home page of the popular Yooji’s restaurant chain said their five eateries in and around Zürich source certain products such as wasabi and nori (seaweed) from Japan, but adds that the last delivery occurred prior to the March 11 disaster.

“The current stocks will last for the next few months. Future deliveries will be checked by Swiss authorities and will only get cleared if they do not represent any health risks,” the statement said. According to a spokeswoman for the restaurant cited in a report by the local 20 Minuten daily newspaper, Yooji’s does not use fish from Japan.

Restaurant Picnic is also preparing information sheets on the provenance of its fish, 20 Minuten said, while Shinsen restaurant also said it imports no fresh food from Japan.

The sea off the coast of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, knocked out by the devastating quake and subsequent tsunami that claimed thousands of lives, is polluted with radioactive particles and alarm about possible food contamination is rising.

Sushi and other fish products used in Japanese restaurants in Switzerland come mainly from Sri Lanka or the Maldives, Daniel Christian, CEO of Leefish, one of the largest fish importers in Europe, was quoted as saying by 20 Minuten.
