ABB Sweden lands $900 million India power order
Swedish-Swiss engineering firm ABB has signed a $900 million contract to supply a 1,728-kilometre long ultra high voltage power line in Agra, India, the firm announced on Wednesday.
"ABB... has been selected by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (PGCIL) to deliver an ultrahigh-voltage transmission system, worth about $900 million," the firm wrote in a statement.
The projected link will be used to transport hydropower from northeastern India to the city of Agra.
The project will be conducted with Indian state-owned power company Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), which will make up the remainder of the project which is worth more than $1.1 billion in total.
"The project is the largest ever for ABB in Sweden within power and we are very honoured at having been chosen for the as a supplier for this historic power project," Sten Jakobsson at ABB Sweden said.
The system will be the world’s first ultrahigh-voltage direct current (UHVDC) link with three converter stations and will operate at 800 kilovolts (kV) with a converter capacity of 8,000 megawatts (MW), the highest ever built.
At full capacity, the link will be able to supply enough electricity to serve 90 million people in the Agra area, based on India's average national consumption, the firm reported.
The UHVDC link and high voltage products will be supplied by ABB in Ludvika in central Sweden.
