Thousands of teachers in eastern Germany are staying away from their classrooms on Tuesday as limited strikes in the public sector continue.

The focal points on Tuesday are the federal states of Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where widespread work stoppages will leave many students with a day off from school.

Three out of four schools in Saxony will see interruptions to the regular school day while in Mecklenburg, one in three teachers is putting down his or her chalk.

Protest actions are also planned in Brandenburg and Thuringia. The Education and Science Workers’ Union (GEW) estimates that some 25,000 people will come out for rallies in Potsdam, Dresden, Schwerin and Erfurt.

Public workers’ unions have been calling limited strikes across the country since the beginning of last week after they failed to reach a wage agreement with employers for some 600,000 public workers nationwide.

Unions have demanded an additional €50 per month plus a three-percent wage increase, in addition to a guarantee of employment for apprentices.

The next round of negotiations is scheduled for March 9 in Potsdam.
