The avalanche occurred in a valley above the village of Tegefjäll, which is part of the Åre ski area. Two people were found in the vicinity of the avalanche, but they had not been near the slide when it took place and hadn't sustained any injuries.

It remains unclear if any other people may have been caught in the slide.

Mountain rescue teams have been in contact with the people who likely triggered the avalanche, according to police in Jämtland County.

According to Anders Aspholm, head of security for Åre, the roughly 500metre avalanche occurred in the Gunnil valley near the treeline, the local Östersunds-Posten (ÖP) newspaper reports.

Eye witnesses to the slide tell the newspaper they didn't see any other people in the area.
