Cross-eyed opossum Heidi makes Oscar picks
Heidi, a famous cross-eyed opossum at the Leipzig Zoo, has picked her favourites to win Oscars this year, predicting Colin Firth will take home the best-actor statuette for his role in “The King’s Speech.”
Appearing on the US TV show “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Wednesday night, Heidi did throw a sideways glance or two at the other nominees - Jeff Bridges, Javier Bardem, James Franco and Jesse Eisenberg – but she showed little hesitation in tipping Firth for the best-actor award by putting her paw on the fake Oscar set up in her pen with his picture on it.
Host Kimmel joked that opossums are considered the film experts of the marsupial world.
The night before, Heidi picked Natalie Portman as the winner of the Oscar for best actress in the film “The Black Swan.” While she appeared to deliberate over Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Lawrence, in the end she choose Portman, who many humans consider a favourite for this weekend’s award ceremony.
The show had sent an American camera team to the Leipzig Zoo for the taping.
Heidi, who is believed to be two-and-a-half-years-old, was abandoned outside an animal shelter in North Carolina in the United States with her sister Naira, and has been living at Leipzig Zoo since May last year.

The zoo believes her eye condition might have been caused by her diet before she was abandoned, or by the fact that she is overweight and has fat deposits behind her eyes.
Her highly publicized predictions about the Oscars recall those of Paul the Octopus, who from his tank at a northern German aquarium achieved global fame for correctly calling the outcome of matches in last year's football World Cup. Paul died from natural causes last October.
