Swedish man shot in Tripoli
A Swedish man was shot and injured in the Libyan capital Tripoli, the Swedish ministry of foreign affairs has confirmed, adding that Sweden is preparing to dispatch staff to assist nationals still in the civil war-torn country.
"We know that a Swedish citizen in his 60s has been shot and injured in Libya and that he has been treated at a hospital," ministry spokesperson Camilla Åkesson Lindblom told AFP.
The man has since been released from hospital and "is back in the house where he has been staying in Tripoli," she said, adding that nothing so far was known about the circumstances of the shooting.
Some 30 Swedes are believed to be stuck in the north African country embroiled for more than a week in protests and a brutal backlash by Moamar Kadhafi's nearly 42-year-old regime.
The violence has left at least 640 people dead, according to Human Rights Watch.
Lindblom said the foreign ministry was "getting ready to send personnel down to Libya," although no one had left yet.
"We are doing what we can to help the Swedes there, especially at the airport, to get them on regular flights out," she said, adding that Stockholm for the time being had no plans to charter a special plane to evacuate Swedes.
