Hit the slopes in southern Sweden? <i>Javisst!</i>
The mountainous north isn't the only place in Sweden where ski bums can carve their way down the hill. Even the flatlands of Skåne have a few slopes that can provide for some wintertime fun, The Local's Karen Holst explains.
While the Province of Plains may not boast the epic range of its neighbourly Alps or match the rugged terrain of Sweden’s north, Skåne does offer a few fun downhill alternatives.
If time is tight, funds are low, practice is needed or you’re just jonesin’ to get your alpine ski on (and you don’t mind artificial snow) – come on down!
Vallåsen is southern Sweden’s largest ski resort and sits on the north side of Halland Ridge, about 70 km north of Helsingborg and 40 km south of Halmstad.
The 5,170 meters of prepared slopes fits all levels of skiing, with one red, two green and three blue runs. The longest run clocks in at 1,260 meters with the highest vertical drop at 145 meters.
A special bonus here is the freestyle terrain park that showcases a mix of beginner to professional-grade rails and hops to hone your tricks. It is specially designed and maintained for hard kicks and soft landings.
The Vallåsen park has two chairlifts, of which one is an express lift, and three draglifts, and claims it can accommodate 7,200 skiers per hour.
Private and group ski lessons are available as is evening ski. An all-day ski-pass will cost adults 290 kronor and youth 235 kronor. Children under 7-years-old, who wear a helmet, ski free.
SydAlpin Kungsbygget, with its 4 kilometers of total alpine ski, presents six runs that range from green to black. The family friendly resort, also located on the north side of Halland Ridge,invites its smallest thrill-seekers to make use of their sledding hill.
An on-site restaurant provides warm-cooked meals or families often bring their own picnics. The resort has outdoor barbeques for guests to use and a heated cabin to lunch in. Day lift passes range from 200 – 260 kronor; kids under 7-years who wear helmets also ski free. Evening ski is available.
Vångabacken, located at the tip of Ivösjön and 26 km northeast of Kristianstad, offers three runs – one beginner, one intermediate and one advanced. The longest slope is about 660 meters with the highest vertical drop of 132 meters. The bunny hill has its own lift and sits in a separate area from other runs. The resort does offer ski school and rental equipment. Full day lift passes are 190 kronor per adult and 130 kronor per child, age 8-15 years.
