Mild weather expected to last most of the week

Spring-like conditions are expected to last across much of Germany through Thursday, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). But winter could return to the eastern part of the country this weekend.

Most Germans will enjoy relatively mild weather for February until mid-week, DWD meteorologist Christian Herold said on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, residents of southern regions could see much of their sunshine blocked by fog, while in the northeast thick cloud cover is expected to move in, but mostly without rain. The west is also likely to see more clouds as the day continues.

Temperatures will be relatively warm at six degrees Celsius in the southeast, 12 degrees in the Rhineland and between two and five degrees in mountainous regions and where there is fog.

On Thursday, rain is expected in the northern half of the country with a temperature of three degrees, while southern regions will see fog replaced by clear skies at a nippy minus four degrees.

The west and southwest will enjoy the warmest weather, with temperatures expected to reach a high of 11 degrees.

Central Germany could experience showers on Friday, while the northeast will likely see some snow. High temperatures in the north and east will reach between 1 and 6 degrees, while temperatures in the west and south will range between 4 and 9 degrees.

Over the weekend, the arrival of cold- and warm-weather systems from the east and west make weather conditions more difficult to predict.

“A cold-weather system from Siberia will roll over central Europe on Friday and into the weekend while a strong Atlantic system will bring warmer air to the North Sea regions,” the DWD's Herold said in a statement. “We are not certain where the boundary between these opposing weather systems will be.”

The DWD estimated regions east of the front will need to brace for wintry conditions.

“Cold temperatures over the weekend are more likely in the northeast of the country than in the southwest,” Herold said.
