Ferry traffic hit by stormy Swedish weather
Another onslaught of stormy weather has prompted warnings for southern Sweden and disrupted Baltic ferry service.
Swedish meteorology agency SMHI issued a class 2 warning for gusty winds and freezing rain across southern Sweden on Monday evening.
Ferry departures between Trelleborg and Sassnitz in northern Germany have also been cancelled due to the rough weather.
An intense low-pressure system which swept down from the British Isles is on its way to southern Sweden, bringing heavy winds and precipitation with it.
SMHI has issued a class 2 warning for Blekinge, Skåne and Halland in southern and western Sweden on account of strong wind gusts expected Monday evening and stormy conditions overnight into Tuesday.
A class 2 warning means that weather can present a danger to the general public and disruptions for basic societal functions.
While Sweden's far south can expect rain from the storm, SMHI predicts wet snow to fall across portions of Götaland and much of Svealand by early Tuesday morning.
The impending storm prompted ferry operator Scanlines to cancel four departures between Trelleborg and Sassnitz. The ferries scheduled to depart at 10.30pm Monday night and 7.45am Tuesday morning will stay in port in Trelleborg.
Meanwhile, boats scheduled to depart Sassnitz at 2.15am and 7.45am Tuesday morning will not make the trip back to Trelleborg.
Ferry operator TT-Line, which also operates boats between Trelleborg and Germany, hasn't announced any cancellations, however.
According to the TT-Line website, its boats are travelling according to schedule.
