Letter to editor prompts memory card miracle
The memory card seen here is not the one discussed in the article

A resident of Malmö in southern Sweden never thought he’d never see the memory card from his digital camera again until he read a letter to the editor in a local newspaper.

Back in October, Pontus Göransson lost a memory card with pictures from his youngest daughter’s baptism.

He made the heartbreaking discovery as he was standing at the counter of a local photography store to order thank you cards for guests who had attended the ceremony.

“I was dumfounded, I knew I’d put it far down in my pocket so I wouldn’t lose it,” Göransson told the local Sydsvenskan newspaper.

He figured the irreplaceable pictures stored in the tiny 3cmx3cm square piece of plastic were gone forever.

But a few weeks later Göransson received a phone call from his father-in-law asking if he’d read the morning paper.

In it was a short letter to the editor entitled “Someone who lost a memory card?”

Göransson said he “couldn’t believe his eyes” when he read the letter.

“That must be my memory card,” he recalled thinking.

The letter had been written by fellow Malmö resident and amateur photographer Manne Widung, who noticed something on the sidewalk near the same photo store where Göransson realised he’d lost his precious baptism pictures.

Widung picked up the memory card and began thinking about ways to contact the owner, eventually deciding that the best source of clues about the card would likely come from any pictures stored on it.

One of the images showed a baptism cake with the words “Isabelle, October 16th”, but Widung’s internet searches to find out more about recent baptisms proved fruitless.

As a last resort, he penned a letter to Sydsvenskan, hoping it would be read by whoever lost the memory card.

Upon reading the letter in the newspaper, Göransson quickly got in touch with Widung and verified that the card was indeed his.

When the two met in person both were amazed that the story had such a happy ending.

“You just don’t think things like this can happen,” they told the newspaper, nearly in unison.

While Widung insisted that the satisfaction of having helped a fellow citizen was reward enough for his efforts, Göransson told Sydsvenskan he planned to give Widung a bottle of high-end whiskey as thanks for helping bring about the memory card miracle.
