Earlier on Tuesday morning, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) suspended the operation after a wheel axle on the carriage that was supposed to tow away the carriage involved in the accident also derailed.

The mishap blocked all local and national train traffic in and out of the upper arrivals hall at the station before normal operations resumed at around 12pm.

"We are now planning to try to push the trailer back to track 7 so that the trains can once again reach the arrival hall," agency press officer Monika Näslund said earlier on Tuesday.

"After that, the tracks will be inspected before the trains can use the upper arrivals hall," she added.

Commuter train operator Pågatågen turned traffic around at Ystad's Persborg station, while national rail operator SJ ran services for long-distance trains to Lund. In both cases, the operators replaced suspended train services with buses.

Traffic in the newly opened City Tunnel was not affected.

The derailment increased the risk of the damaged wagon from the train involved in the accident tipping over onto adjacent tracks.

After the carriage was towed away, authorities inspected the track before normal traffic resumed.
