After the sub-zero temperatures of New Year's Eve, the weather is likely to get milder in the first few days of January, but dangerous ice is expected to form on roads.

The German Weather Service (DWD) has forecast that temperatures are likely to climb above freezing in the first two days of the New Year after the bitter cold of the last week of 2010.

For those looking for an adventurous New Year's swim, a north-westerly current from the North Sea will bring water temperatures to between 2 and 4 degrees Celsius, warming air temperatures in Germany too.

But the milder weather will cause precipitation and a good chance of dangerous ice on the roads, the DWD warned.

The sky will be overcast on New Year's Eve, with snowfall expected in a band across the middle of the country from North Rhine-Westphalia in the west to Brandenburg and Saxony in the east. Temperatures will range from the +3 degrees C in the west to –3 in the east.

The cloud cover, relatively mild temperatures and intermittent snowfall will continue throughout the weekend, with driving conditions made even more dangerous by fog in the south-west. Storms can be expected near the coastlines and in the mountains to the east.

Temperatures will dip again on Sunday night, getting as low as –15 degrees C in certain areas.
