Snow chaos continues in southern Sweden

Snow, freezing temperatures and driving winds continue to cause chaos in parts of southern Sweden.

Travel warnings were given on Christmas Eve for the regions of Skåne, Blekinge, Kalmar and the Baltic island of Öland.

Öland has received the brunt of the bad weather where drifts and blizzards have made ploughing almost impossible.

The high winds and 15 centimetres of snow have even resulted in one snow plough becoming stuck in a drift.

Trains encountered less problems on Christmas Eve, although there was a reduced service in some parts of the country and one train became stuck in the snow between Kalmar and Linköping with passengers being evacuated by tracked vehicles.

Härjedalen in the north of Sweden saw the country's coldest Christmas temperature of -38 Celsius.

Although, there is some way to go to beat the all time record of -52.6 Celsius, which was recorded in Lappland in 1966.

The heavy snowfall should reach Svealand and southern Norrland on the 26th December. However, from Tuesday, the weather is expected to be clear but cold over the whole of Sweden.
