After a brief weekend thaw from the cold snap that has gripped Germany for much of December, the German Weather Service (DWD) predicted Sunday that snow and freezing temperatures would make a comeback starting Monday.

With warmer temperatures on Saturday and Sunday, some Germans traded their winter gear for waterproof boots, as melting snow made for slush-filled sidewalks and street corners. But the Monday forecast from the DWD in Offenbach anticipates new snowfall and cloudy skies in the east of the country.

Western areas should be spared precipitation at the start of a new week, with lots of sunshine earlier in the day on Monday. Temperatures around the country are expected to drop as low as minus 6 degrees Celsius.

Southwestern Germany is the exception, with the DWD predicting drier and sunnier weather and temperatures up to 2 degrees there. The rest of the country could see snow overnight.

On Tuesday, the east is expected to see intermittent snowfall, with cloudy weather in most areas. Temperatures in the north are estimated to fall between zero and minus 2 degrees.

The DWD anticipates similar conditions for Wednesday, complete with clouds in the east and south and more snowfall. Western and northwestern Germany could see some sunshine, but temperatures further west and near the North Sea should linger around zero.
