Man lay dead in his flat for more than a year

A family from Landskrona in southern Sweden had never seen anyone go into or out of the apartment across the hall until police entered on Wednesday and made a grisly discovery.

Police were called after the landlord opened to door to the mysterious flat to allow a worker to replace a cable television jack, only to be met by a horrific stench, the local Helsingborg Dagbladet (HD) newspaper reports.

Upon searching the apartment, police came across the rotting and mummified body of an 88-year-old man who they estimate may have died on November 22nd of last year, as the date was written on an address label of an unpacked travel bag.

“What has happened is quite tragic and regrettable, but we never received any indications from neighbours or relatives that something wasn’t right. The rent has come in as it should have and we haven’t heard anything from the electric company, for example,” Cecilia Ahlquist, a spokesperson for property management company Newsec Asset Management, told the newspaper.

Neighbour Mariam Moussa, who moved into the building with her family around a year and a half ago, had never seen anyone enter or leave the apartment where the dead 88-year-old was found.

“It feels a bit odd that someone could live here so long and not know that someone lived there,” she told HD.

“It seems a bit strange. Doesn’t he have any family members who’ve missed him?”
