Snowstorms threaten Sweden's east: agency
The Swedish Meteorological Agency (SMHI) has issued a class 2 warning after predicting several centimetres of snowfall will fall on parts of the country's east coast overnight.
The storm is expected to cause traffic problems in combination with anticipated high winds.
"After a cold and sunny start to the day in most parts of the country, denser clouds in the far south in the afternoon are increasing, as well as northeasterly winds," wrote SMHI meteorologist Niklas Einevik in a statement on Monday.
The class 2 warning (on an increasing scale of three) carries with it the possibility of dangerous weather conditions to the public, as well as potential significant material damage.
Uppland, Stockholm, Södermanland and Östergötland are expected be particularly affected by this weather system. Up to 20 centimeters of snow, as well as windy weather, are predicted.
SMHI has furthermore issued a class 1 warning to all surrounding counties.
Starting this evening, an area north of Götaland will receive snow and rain, which will spread to Svealand on Tuesday mostly as snowfall. Locally, up to 15 centimetres of snow is expected and in combination with fresh northeasterly winds.
There is a risk that falling snow will cause traffic problems, warned SMHI. In the south, temperatures are expected to range between 0 and five degrees, while to the north, they are expected to range from minus 5 to minus 15.
The approaching storm is also proving to be problematic for ferry services.
Destination Gotland has cancelled two trips between Visby and Nynäshamn on Tuesday. The affected departures are the 7.05am on Tuesday morning as well as the return to Nynäshamn at 11.05am, Sveriges Radio Gotland reported on Monday.
