Malmö claims Swedish footballing crown
Malmö FF secured its 16th Swedish football championship on Sunday with a convincing 2-0 home victory over visiting Mjällby.
It was the first time since 2004 that the former European Cup finalists took home the Allsvenskan “gold”.
“The emotions have been just fantastic for the entire match. I’ve never before been a part of a setting like this. I already had goose bumps during the starting lineup,” Malmö striker Daniel Larsson told Canal Plus following the match.
The 23-year-old Larsson helped start the day’s scoring with a nifty feed to teammate Jiloan Hamad, who then volleyed home Malmö’s 1-0 score.
Just before half, Larsson’s playmaking once again led to a Malmö score, this time by Agon Mehmeti.
Malmö’s 2-0 lead held up through the second half in a match which left little doubt who was the stronger club.
Helsingborg were the only other side capable of depriving Malmö - beaten by Nottingham Forest in the 1979 European Cup final - of the title but their chance evaporated after a 0-0 home draw with Kalmar to lose out by two points.
Malmö finished the campaign on 67 points, suffering just five defeats in their 30 matches as well as netting the most goals and allowing the fewest of any team in the 2010 campaign.
Helsingborg ended up with 65 - last season's champions AIK finished a lowly 11th, while Åtvidaberg and Brommapojkarna were relegated.
“We’re the best this year. That’s just the way it is,” midfielder Guillermo Molins told Canal Plus.
