A private citizen found the body at the corner of Rutger Fuchsgatan and Bohusgatan near Skanstull in Stockholm's Södermalm.

The 49-year-old Stockholm man was not previously known to police.

Police have launched a preliminary investigation into the murder. Technicians have worked at the site where they found the body throughout the day and police have mapped out the man's last moments before he died.

"We have a gap between 1am at night and 7am in the morning when he was found and we are very interested in what people may have seen at this location during that time," said chief investigator Conny Dahl.

The police also have information about a man in his 30s who was in the area early in the morning.

"This man must have been in this area from 10pm to 6am. We are interested in getting in contact with him to hear if he has made some observations or with anyone else who has concerns," said Dahl.

The police has not yet commented on the victim's injuries or what weapon was used.

"What we can say is that they were not self-inflicted injuries and the area where the body was found is likely a crime scene," he said.
