Remand hearing request for Örebro rape suspect
Prosecutors have requested a remand hearing for the 23-year-old man suspected of committing several rapes in Örebro in central Sweden following “certain admissions” to police about a March attack.
Chief prosecutor Gunnar Brodin has requested a remand hearing stemming from two cases of suspected aggravated rape and two attempted rapes. All the attacks took place in Örebro, with the first coming back in 2005. The remaining three took place this year.
A remand hearing is scheduled for Friday before the district court in Örebro.
According to police in Örebro, the 23-year-old made “certain confessions” during questioning on Wednesday about a rape that occurred back in March.
Police spokesperson Torbjörn Carlson told the TT news agency that the confessions concerned a rape at a Eurostop motorway rest stop in Örebro.
The two alleged rapes occurred on March 28th and October 10th of this year. One of the alleged attempted rapes took place August 11th, 2005 and the other last Sunday.
According to the suspect’s attorney, his client has been informed of suspicions against him regarding three attempted rapes and two rapes.
Police have also distanced themselves from reports that the 23-year-old was also a suspect in an unsolved double homicide in Linköping in 2004.
“I think we would have already learned something if the forensics lab had received a hit when comparing his DNA,” inspector Jan Staaf of the Linköping police told TT on Thursday.
Meanwhile, another woman in Örebro reported being attacked on Thursday morning. She told police that someone had tried to rape her near the centre of the Tybble neighbourhood in Örebro.
“The woman is being interviewed now and we don’t know yet if the incident will be classified as molestation, attempt rape, or something else,” said Örebro police spokesperson Torbjörn Carlson to TT.
