Many Germans care more about whether a concert venue has clean toilets than the quality of the music, according to a consumer report released this week.

According to the Society for Consumer Research (GfK) numbers released on Monday, a mere 82 percent of people said they pay attention to sound quality, while 90 percent said they are more concerned with the state of the loos.

The Hamburg-based market research institute also highlighted the waning popularity of concerts within the event market, showing a drop in revenue for the second year in a row, with a decrease in ticket sales of 12 percent for 2009.

The lack of fan enthusiasm is due to two factors – the financial crisis and rising ticket prices, according to Jens Michow, president of the Federal German Association for Promoters and Event Business (BDV).

But one exception in 2009 were tickets to musicals. Though the average ticket ran a steep €59 in 2009, sales increased.

“That is likely because going to a musical is a family event and often takes place in connection with a trip to the city,” Michow said.

Hamburg’s version of “The Lion King,” or Der König der Löwen, was the most successful musical in Germany last year.

GfK polled almost 4,000 people aged 10 and up in May 2010 for the report.
